Here's where it gets practical. A small bag of chips says "2.5 servings per container." You open the bag, eat the whole thing. The nutrition label shows 150 calories per serving. You just ate 375 calories, not 150. But if you just glance at the calories line without checking servings, you've underestimated by 150%.
This happens constantly. A chocolate bar showing 80 grams of sugar per serving, with 2 servings in the bar. A bottle of pasta sauce showing sodium and sugar that doubles or triples if you account for how much people actually use. Per 100g vs. Per Serving (And Why Europe Got This Right)
European nutrition labels show "per 100g" as a default. This makes comparing products easy. A cereal with 3g of sugar per 100g is clearly different from one with 12g per 100g. You don't have to know the serving size. You don't have to do math. You're comparing apples to apples.
US labels show per-serving nutrition, which varies wildly by manufacturer interpretation of serving size. The label is designed to inform, but the serving size is designed by humans who have an incentive to make numbers look small.
